1. Waking up Screaming: Haunting Tales of Terror - H.P Lovecraft
Still currently reading, but the way Lovecraft writes the setting and increasing fear of his characters, I have to take breaks from it. So far my favorite story is "The Shadow Over Innsmouth"
2. Scary Stories to Read in the Dark - Alvin Schwarz
Some of these were damn creepy, even now. But that art by Stephen Gammell, OMFG. It was so beautiful and horrifying at the same time. I remember more than once not wanting to really look at it while reading the stories, as if it might just look back. This includes the other two int he series.
3. World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War - Max Brooks
It's more terrifying than spooky, based on the fact that it makes it obvious humans can be more dangerous than zombies, and you still have zombies to contend with. But the audio version (I've only listened to the first version with 6 hours, not the one with 12 hours yet) really adds a creep factor when you can hear the different actor's emotions throughout.
4. It - Stephen King
Already hated clowns before this, but now I had a good reason.
5. I Am Legend and Other Stories - Richard Matheson
The other stories had several that kinda creeped me out. Still want to read more of his stuff to get a feel for this author.
6. Penpal - Dathan Auerbach
This is still on my TBR list as technically I never started reading the actual book, just the reddit parts online. I think I got 4 parts in, but that was enough to feel threatened by the growing unease.
I love horror movies and games, but haven't found that many horror novels to read. Do you have any recommendations for books that really give you the heebie jeebies and you have a hard time reading because you start feeling something else in the room with you?
