BOOK REVIEW - TUESDAY FLIRTATIONS - Forever Home: BBW Paranormal Shifter Romance (Sawtooth Shifters #1)

Author: Kristen Strassel -
Format: Kindle ebook. Free at the time on amazon.
Did it feel like a full novel: not really, more like the first half
Cliffhanger: no
Genre: shifter romance
Dates Read: Oct 7, 2015
Official Blurb: Shadow Channing is in chains.

Pack rivalries have imprisoned his family beside their enemies. They're forced to fight for survival each month in a dog fighting ring. Shadow assures his brothers they'll escape, but to do so they must either team up with the rival pack that led them to their capture, or fight to the death for their freedom in front of a cheering crowd.

Trina is in recovery.

When rumors of dog fights start swirling around town, the owner of Forever Home Animal Shelter is determined to put a stop to them and bring the dogs to safety. Even when they turn out to be wolves. Trina knows that everyone deserves a second chance at life, especially after a car accident ripped hers away from her.

Shadow will do anything to repay Trina for saving his life, but soon he realizes he's not the only one who needs saving.

One Sentence: Damaged shifters have to help damaged ladies.

Full Review: I enjoyed the way the shifters really had a hard time in the beginning when they're captured. Their stress and desperation was quite realistic. Later when they're rescued, you see their rescuers are also hurt. But where it bugged me was that now the shifters are fine, willing to help their respective ladies. I like big strong men, but if you're hook is them being in trouble, why not keep them hurt a bit longer?

Otherwise it was OK. Trina wasn't useless, and Shadow wasn't an alphahole. At one part, it felt like he kinda subbed to her (wolf-style) while they're making love and it was beyond adorable, but then never happened again so I'm not sure if I just read to much into it. She's a BBW type, and though at the beginning I liked her "I'm busy leaning over and my rolls are hanging out, oh well losers watching" persona, but then once again falls into the "Oh he's so hot, I'm so fat, waah waah" mindset that irks me. Maybe these novels should be categorized as "insecure" and include plain girls, skinny girls, and of course drop dead gorgeous models because EVERYONE can be insecure. Label it BBW when the heroine is large and content, please. But I guess that's a tirade for another time.

I believe the next novel deals more with Shadow and Trina, even though they're already a couple? I guess having to figure out who the Big Bad is, being set up in this first story. I don't think I'd follow the series, but you never know. Sometimes i mull over things later and appreciate them better.

MEME - Stacking the Shelves - 10-24-15 #015

One of the books I got this week, The Change, I mainly did because of skimming someone's review. They mentioned that the heroine gets to be the "fierce and protective" one, and the hero a bit more submissive. Oh dear me, it's what I usually look for and rarely find. I really hope I can make time for this book next month, in spite of NaNoWriMo. Her New Toy sounds like it has a similar dynamic, but more in the kink-manner. I'm all for that that, I just was pleased by one that may not have to rely on kink to have a man be a bit sub to his lady.

BOOK REVIEW - When They Shine Brightest

Author: Yordan Zhelyazkov -
Format: Kindle ebook. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. Amazon link here.
Did it feel like a full novel: yes
Cliffhanger: No; satisfactory end for the book though sets up for a great series.
Genre: fantasy, young adult
Dates Read: Oct 3-7, 2015
Official Blurb: Korsak Dryshore, a middle-aged war veteran, is being held directly responsible for the invasion of his home town of Seten. Everyone in Seten, including his family, blames him for losing the last ditch defense against the aggressors. Utterly defeated, and mourning the loss of his eldest son in the conflict, he has spent the last months following the battle away from home. Upon his return, he has to confront the animosity of the populace, made even worse by his bringing a heathen girl back with him.
Beaten, downcast and in despair, he is resigned to merely spending the remainder of his days in meek quietude. That would prove impossible, however, as he's soon implicated in an escalating political and religious conflict within the city. To make matters worse, his youngest son and the foreign girl are dragged deep into the whirlwind of the crisis.

And in the meantime, They are about to set over Seten.

One sentence: Fantastic new character-driven fantasy with deep world-building.

Review: This book felt very different, and in an overall good way. I haven't gotten to read a book translated from another language in a long time, and I could really feel the differences from culture and language. Mostly in a positive manner. Granted, some of the sentences were a bit hard to grasp until you reread them, or the grammar/word choice was awkward, but nothing that really hurt the experience of reading this novel.

The 'hero' is Korsak, a veteran who's been through quite a lot and has lost the respect of his wife and pretty much his entire home city. You can tell he's more than fed up, but he keeps on going. I really, really, REALLY liked him! Arty is a little girl whom he brought with him, and though they actually interact only sparingly when you consider the entire book, you can feel how close they are. It's really sweet, and its description was one of the main reasons I thought it'd be a book I would enjoy. Arty is adorable, and deals with the crap that comes her way admirably.

The world building is smooth, not just an info-dump, and quite rich. There are things that I didn't understand fully, but it wasn't so much as to be annoying. Their culture feels historical though I would say it's more fantasy, which I really enjoyed. The religious aspects are rich, even if you may not have the full story of their beliefs.

It's a very original tale, and I really relished how it didn't follow the patterns of similar themed novels. There's a lot of interaction amongst the characters, but they grow and change because of themselves, not just predictable situations with each other. I would like to read the next book in this series. The end of the story surprised me in a way, and I am not quite sure if I like it. I mean, I liked the story, but I'm not sure if I liked having my heart wrenched about ;] Well, maybe a little, because it shows how attached I became to the way the characters were written!

If you're looking for something new and different, I really suggest you give this novel a try!

BOOK REVIEW - TUESDAY FLIRTATIONS - Torrid (Torrid Trilogy Book 1)

I'm sure a lot of us download free romance novels to read because there are SO very many of them out there. And then the little guys breed like rabbits in our eReaders. Why don't we share our reviews/impressions so we can find the best ones to read?

Rules:
1. Read a free romance book (this was started for legally free eBooks, but you can count anything gifted, borrowed, ARC, etc!)
2. Review it on your blog. If you can and it's still available, share the link to the free book.
3. Link back here by using the code below.
4. Leave your link to the specific blog post (NOT your main site) in a comment on the recent week's TF post or via the linky.
5. Delight in reading reviews by real people who's likes/dislikes you can compare to and thus find a romance you most likely will enjoy :D

Author: Jayne Blue -
Format: Kindle ebook. Free at the time on amazon
Did it feel like a full novel: no, but a very good ‘first half of a book’ kind of feel
Cliffhanger: semi, nothing really surprising though
Genre: romantic, suspense
Dates Read: Sept 6-9, 2015
Official Blurb: Sometimes, the thing you want belongs to someone else...

Jack - Once upon a time I had everything. The perfect family. The perfect life. In one horrible year, it went away. I can never have it back but I can hurt the man responsible for taking what was left. I know how to steal something even more important from him. He doesn’t see how she looks at me instead of him. I can make her burn for me, make her addicted to me before I send her back.
And it will be so easy.

Tora - I’ll cross any line to get to the truth, no matter who I have to hurt. I don’t have a choice. I’m not afraid to use sex to get what I want. I know you think that makes me a whore. But until you understand what’s at stake, you can’t know.
Don’t judge me until you do.

Sometimes, you have to take what you want no matter what it costs.

Fascinating plot with good history.

I did not care for the way Tora constantly felt guilty (though you see it’s not so much from love) for cheating on Seth, but Jack never has those kinds of doubts. Double standards like that just drive me nuts. Tora should have enjoyed it a bit better, and maybe Jack could have felt a little remorse, if only because he doesn’t know the whole story. This part of their “relationship” really grated on me whenever it was touched upon. Otherwise, they make an enjoyable sort of couple. They have good chemistry as well, with enough stuff going around their lives to realistically be fighting the “I shouldn’t. I should. I shouldn’t!” self-thoughts.

As to the developing plot, it starts out well in the amount of details given then later discovered, but it felt like it took me a while to care for the two main characters. For a bit of the beginning I didn’t care if they all ended up in a horrible mess. But slowly they become more likable and I wanted them to get together in a happy way. But as you delve more into what's going on behind the scenes and in the past, you get hooked with wanting things to work out beyond the romance!

The alternating POVs are pretty good, they differ enough from each other so as to feel like two different people, and they don’t constantly rehash over the same scene with each POV. None of the other characters have too much substance to them though, except Seth. And he’s too easy to hate to really care about as more than just a foil to the couple. But as a guy you hate, he seems like he has considerable power in his own way to prevent these two characters from really getting together.

BOOK REVIEW - Wonderland (Intergalactic Fairy Tales #1)

Author: Robert McKay -
Format: Kindle ebook. I received a free copy in exchange for an honest review. Amazon link here.
Did it feel like a full novel: yes
Cliffhanger: No; satisfactory end for the book though there is a planned sequel.
Genre: sci fi, young adult
Dates Read: Sept 9-Oct 1, 2015
Official Blurb: Teenage Alice didn’t mean to end up on Wonderland, but the living spaceship she commandeered had other plans, and he was very late.

Abandoned on an unfamiliar planet, Alice’s first day as a space pirate has fallen into madness. Caterpillars? Mad hatters? A Jabberwock? A queen known for chopping off heads? Alice must face all Wonderland can throw at her if she’s to take back possession of The White Rabbit and leave Wonderland in one piece.

One sentence: Delightful re-imagining of Alice in Wonderland who's main character grows up while not wanting to grow up!

Review: When I started this book, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. The first quarter or so is a little slow and awkward, where you aren't sure how old Alice is (even later, she has a tendency to act like an 8 year old instead of 13). The minimal action feels rather predictable initially as well.

However, after that little bit of a hump, then the story really starts rolling! You aren't annoyed so much by Alice. You follow her and hope she's going to get out of these cascading messes! You start getting really fascinated with these versions of the classic Wonderland characters (I never thought I'd have so much love for Lyla the dormouse, Cheshire, and Tweedle Dum & Teedle Dee!). And the action feels just right, with enough pauses to balance out when they gotta figure out a plan. Alice matures in learning how to cope with people, but not to the extent where she loses who she is at heart (an awesome space pirate captain!).

The style of sci fi is lovely, where you can really imagine a neon and shining world that would match the many stylistic countryside versions of Wonderland. The technology has quite a bit of a fantastical feel so it's both sci fi and true Madness. I used to enjoy the Wonderland mythos a fair amount, but I must say I think McKay did such an excellent job, that I think I prefer his version!

There are little parts here and there that I had to wonder if it's really a young adult book, or actually for older young adults, but nothing graphic or detailed. I am quite curious about the next part, based on the setup at the end of this novel. There's so much room for growth, once it reaches a point where it's not so much going to be led by the original story.

BOOK REVIEW - TUESDAY FLIRTATIONS - The Temp - Part 1 (The Temp Series)

I'm sure a lot of us download free romance novels to read because there are SO very many of them out there. And then the little guys breed like rabbits in our eReaders. Why don't we share our reviews/impressions so we can find the best ones to read?

Author: Lacey Wolfe -
Format: Kindle ebook. Free at the time on amazon.
Did it feel like a full novel: nope, was a serial
Cliffhanger: yes
Genre: romance, boss/secretary
Dates Read: Sept 10-11, 2015
Official Blurb: Hardened by her damaged past, Alice Bennett has no desire for any type of relationship and easily dismisses the warnings about her handsome, but extremely difficult, temporary boss. She is determined to do her job, and do it well. She needs this job, and the references that come from working at a prestigious law firm.

But the moment she lays eyes on him, Alice’s determination waivers as unexpected desires stir inside her – even as he barks orders about her choice of lunch.

Dylan Marshall is the best lawyer in the city and knows exactly what he wants, and how he wants it done. As the senior partner at his prominent law firm, he expects the people working for him to do what they’re told. Discouraged by the string of incompetent temps, he has low expectations for anyone new the agency sends his way.

But the latest temporary assistant is anything but incompetent, and Dylan discovers he wants to know more about her, and intimately. Especially when she stands her ground and questions his orders. Suddenly, this domineering boss learns he prefers a woman to be his equal.

Sexy office romp, but just can’t enjoy serials that much.

Alice is a decent protagonist, but I do not know why she is so against Dylan in the beginning. Yeah, he has some mood swings from work, but she goes so far as to call him bipolar. Then later she gets upset he’s telling her what to do to include answering the phone and she gets bitchy about it. Sorry Alice, a secretary handles paperwork. Don’t act like he’s putting you out by asking you to do your damn job.

Though he’s not all that great himself, being that he has fired secretaries for flirting before, and then likes to imagine being intimate with April. Maybe you need to fire yourself bro. Then this little kicker:

He liked a woman to stand up to him, but sometimes he just wanted her to shut up and go with it.

The feminist in me just can’t stand it. If you prefer spirited girls, that’s cool. If you prefer submissive ones, that’s cool too. But if you want to choose when they can act a certain way for your pleasure? Just F-off dude.

But my feminist side was surprised and really appreciated that when Alice asked him not to hit her (like spanking or anything), he wants to, but totally didn’t (mind you, this is like a paragraph away from previous)! He thought about introducing her to such pleasures later on, but he does not try to guilt or otherwise pressure her at all! This was totally unexpected and made me want to like him again, oy. Such a conundrum!

The sex scene was pretty alluring, though short. Something to keep bookmarked, certainly.

BOOK REVIEW - Lumière (Illumination Paradox #1) [Net Galley]

Author: Jaqueline Garlick - http://www.twitter.com/jackie_garlick
Format: Kindle ebook. Free from Net Galley. Amazon info here.
Did it feel like a full novel: yes
Cliffhanger: Yes, in that good way where you’re prepared knowing there'll be another book.
Genre: steampunk, young adult
Dates Read: Aug 21-Sept 1, 2015
Official Blurb: One determined girl. One resourceful boy. One miracle machine that could destroy everything.

After an unexplained flash shatters her world, seventeen-year-old Eyelet Elsworth sets out to find the Illuminator, her father’s prized invention. With it, she hopes to cure herself of her debilitating seizures before Professor Smrt-her father’s arch nemesis-discovers her secret and locks her away in an asylum.

Pursued by Smrt, Eyelet locates the Illuminator only to see it whisked away. She follows the thief into the world of the unknown, compelled not only by her quest but by the allure of the stranger-Urlick Babbit-who harbors secrets of his own.

Together, they endure deadly Vapours and criminal-infested woods in pursuit of the same prize, only to discover the miracle machine they hoped would solve their problems may in fact be their biggest problem of all.

Review: Eyelet is a solid heroine, in a lovely steampunk world with all sorts of secrets that you get to savor as you read.

I really enjoyed this steampunk world! There was a beautifully combination of that kind of technology with the culture, and it had a very London-ish atmosphere without overdoing it. It took me perhaps a chapter or two to like Eyelet, but in a good way. She’s such a strong and determined young girl that it makes me happier to get to know her more as the book progressed.

Urlick was wonderful. Not just as in him being a good guy (but he is), but a different kind of hero for the heroine to contrast with. He’s a smart young man, driven, and he protects those he cares for. But he’s also different. He’s not the normal handsome type of hero we usually see in YA novels. He’s not even ‘meh’. Eyelet instantly thinks he looks like a monster the first time she sees him. And though that kinda hurts him, he doesn’t let it bother him too much. He argues with Eyelet adorably, and when they start to work together, you can see it’s only because they’re fitting opposites that match each other perfectly.

I only have small complaints for this novel. One is that I expected only steampunk and got a touch of magic here and there. The magic just threw me off because until it popped in wherever it did, everything made it’s own scientific sense, even if you don’t know why yet. But it’s a tiny thing, as the rest is really spectacular in its reasoning and explanations. Otherwise, Eyelet and Urlick’s relationship starts tenuously, where I think they can feel attraction but they’re still trying to learn to trust each other, so that’s OK. But they do have that problem of misunderstanding each other when just a few conversations would fix it up. Thankfully they make plans around each other, and it’s not the situations where I hate them just holding grudges but talking sweetly, you know the type I mean?

If you’re looking for something a bit different (but good!) within young adult novels, I’d highly recommend you give Lumiere a try! Even if YA isn’t your main preference, I still think you might enjoy it!

BOOK REVIEW - TUESDAY FLIRTATIONS - Teaching the Boss (Billionaires in the City 1)

Author: Mallory Crowe -
Format: Kindle ebook. Free at the time on amazon
Did it feel like a full novel: full novella
Cliffhanger: nope
Genre: romance, boss/secretary
Dates Read: Aug 30-Sept 1, 2015
Official Blurb: Business-school student April Morgan is ready to graduate--from school, from the secretary pool, and from never-gonna-happen fantasies involving Sam Hunt, her hunky billionaire boss. But when Sam’s girlfriend of the week pushes her too far, April finds herself quitting on the spot with only a mountain of student loan debt to keep her company. In steps Sam’s worst enemy, his father, with a job offer she can't refuse.

Sam was born into privilege, but refused to live life with a silver spoon in his mouth. After a decade of hard work, he’s on the verge of taking his business public and proving to his tyrannical family that he can make it without their help. When he finds out that April is working for his father, he knows she’s been turned into a pawn in his father’s twisted games.

Despite Sam’s warnings, April is determined to prove she doesn’t need him to make in New York City. But when she finds documents that could lead to Sam losing everything he’s worked for, April realizes that she and Sam have to work together to save the empire they’ve both worked to build.

Solid heroine who won’t let her man dictate her life.

This may have worked better as a longer story, but at the same time, it had everything it needed as is. Billionaire Sam Hunt is doing his best with his fledgling company, always depending on his trusty assistant. Since they’re only friends to start, he has a fling who screws things up between himself and April. April ends up working for his dad, who totally feels like he is always out to get him. Then of course, some romance, some plans, some bits of working together as a team, it’s all there nicely.

But was it boring, being so complete? Certainly not! Though at first I was bothered by richboy Sam, I really started to like him once the author gives him some heavy history (and not the stupid romantic kind) that he obviously grew from. He does the common “gonna love on you so you won’t be mad” thing with April, but it’s not so annoyingly blatant as other writers have used. April also doesn’t lose her strength throughout the book, and you really hope her stuff will work out for her when she gets into rough patches.

The one part that unfortunately really brought this book down was near the end. This is how their conversation goes:

Sam closed the gap between them and set his hands on her shoulders. “If you really loved me, you wouldn’t ask this.” She met his somber blue eyes. “If you really loved me, I wouldn’t have to.”

FRUSTRATING, ISN’T IT? First off, I can’t stand these kind of hateful ultimatum-like phrases. Secondly, I thought personally that April’s position was ridiculous and not really so defend-able (but I accept that this may be based on my biased feelings of the thing she wants to do). But third, then April just goes off character and starts acting like a needy whiny brat that is annoying compared to how normal she was the rest of the novel.

There is a HEA ending which I did enjoy, so they make up nicely of course. I just felt that though the drama may have been necessary, it was overloaded and made these two characters feel like they ere acting it out for the sake of dramatic tension rather than just going about their lives. Other than that, a fun billionaire romance, as I haven’t found too many to recommend yet.

MEME - Fright Fall Read-a-Thon [Seasons of Reading] Goal Post

I had so much fun with their summer readathon that I just have to joint his one too! I don't work overtime tonight, so that's a couple extra hours to read than I'd normally have. I'm not sure yet exactly what scary book I'll be reading, so I'm going to leave that open for now (recommendations welcome!). Need to get some books done and out of the way for NaNoWriMo next month. I've been working on that one story for over a month, but only able to do maybe a paragraph or two every week :/
  1. undecided scary book
  2. When They Shine Brightest - currently 65% - goal is to finish
  3. Forever Home - not started - goal is to finish
  4. Rees - currently 15% - goal is to get to 50%
  5. undecided short romance - goal is to start and finish
  6. get 50 pages done of any paperback currently being read

So what are your goals like? Hope to see you around on the twitter tag #FrightFall !

MEME - Musing Mondays

So this month's Musing Mondays post won't have a theme in it. I didn't get to follow my space theme so well in September. And though October is full of spooky fun, I don't feel like making that so much a theme. Honestly, I have so many books to review for Net Galley and different authors that actually maybe that should be it.... Hmm... Gives enough of an illusion of productivity at least ;]

I’m currently reading…
1. review request/Net Galley - Chaos Company (still), Traitor (still)
2. Tuesday Flirtations - Captive in the Dark (still), Her Dark Angel, The Extra
3. for fun/next in series - Rees
4. physical book - In the Hand of the Goddess (still)
5. author request review - When They Shine Brightest

Up next I think I’ll read…
Measure of Devotion
Salem's Lot
Beware of Me
Noir
Menagerie

I bought the following book(s) in the past week…
Rees
Dirty Bad Strangers

I’m super excited to tell you about (book/author/bookish-news)…
Nothing specific this time around.

I’m really upset by (book/author/bookish-news)…
Can't think of anything.

I can’t wait to get a copy of…
Salem's Lot, so I can start reading it for the readalong!

I wish I could read ___, but…
All the Net Galley books, just so I can get some more ;3

I blogged about ____ this past week…
Just reviews. I need more posts. Hopefully the challenge to write 31 of them this month will help force inspiration!

CHALLENGE - Blog Ahead 2015 [Herding Cats and Burning Soup]

blog ahead 2015

Very happy to find this challenge! Especially when I saw someone's comment to somebody else's starter post. Whatever will I do in November during NaNoWriMo unless I have a nice stockpile of posts to keep me afloat?! Plus I think it's good practice (for me personally) to have at least two weeks ready, in case life gets in the way as it did recently. So here's going!

Starting count of posts Oct 4th (my first day officially doing this):
ZERO

Well.... at least there's no where to go but up ;]

READ ALONG - Salem's Lot [Avid Reader's Musings]

I had so much fun with Ti's Atlas Shrugged readalong, that I am super eager to join this one as well! I know I bought the book used a few years ago, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to find it, or it's still in a box somewhere. I'll look this week for it, but otherwise I'll just do the ebook thing, hmm. Maybe I'll try to check it out electronically? I wonder what the demand would be, being that it's already October. We shall see! Click on the pic for the direct link so y'all can join in too :D
